Within the last two months, I have traveled twice to Atlanta, once to Austin, once to Dallas, once to the beautiful Sacramento Mountains, and once to New Orleans, LA. Each trip was for a distinct purpose. My travels included work ranging from pastoral duties to opportunities to speak to bleeding disorders community members.

After the last trip, I breathed a sigh of relief when I took my shoes off. I honored all my commitments, and now I can rest at home. I love to travel, but there is nothing like sleeping in my bed. I miss my role in my family’s daily routine. I agree with Dorothy as she taps her ruby shoes and says, “There is no place like home.”

I think of Jesus as he lived on this earth and how often he had to sneak away from the group to reconnect with his father. He loved his ministry, but taking time to speak with Abba recentered him. He found the strength to move forward in hope and agape.

Maybe the Messiah needed to find moments of rest to offer his children the same space. In other words, how could he offer us a place to restore our souls when he felt exhausted from his daily work? I think about what flight attendants say right before take-off. “In case of a change in cabin pressure, an oxygen mask will fall. Please put the mask on your face first and then offer help to the younger ones who travel with you.

The times I retreat to my comfort zone give me a chance to refresh my soul. Having taken care of my needs, I can reach out and help others who seek shelter in a time of storm. I can lead them to the place beside still waters. Together, we experience the tender care of Jesus as he restores our souls.

May we all find rest through a weary time and discover Jesus, ready with open arms to welcome us in.
