We are born to look for signs. Our culture is full of signals to indicate which way to turn, what career to follow, and even what to buy a significant other. One cannot walk ten steps without encountering different shapes and sizes with writing on them to help guide a person through life. Sometimes, the signs come in big neon lights in various colors to make them seem more appealing.
Walking down the street, I’m often overwhelmed by the sheer number of signs vying for my attention, each promising the best of all possible worlds. The bombardment of endless posts can be dizzying. In the midst of this chaos, I yearn for one thing, one sign that can lead me to true peace. I strive to tune out the constant lights and words above me, focusing on the most essential thing in life: a connection to the One who brings me peace.
With all the noise and access lights around me, I thought of the verse in the Gospel of Luke: “This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger” (Lk. 2:12, CEB). This verse, spoken by an angel to shepherds, foretold the birth of Jesus, the Savior. Suddenly, I remembered that I had found what I needed. My sign did not come in neon lights or loud noises but in the form of a baby.
As we navigate through the season of Advent, let’s each embark on a personal journey to rediscover our faith and remember why we prepare our hearts for the season of Christmas. We find our way to the manger and a child so small yet powerful as to transform our hearts. This creche is more than our sign. This quiet scene is our hope.
