“Mary said, ‘With all my heart I glorify the Lord! In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my saviour’” (Lk. 1:46-47 CEB).
Mary’s response to God’s calling can inspire admiration and trust. Her encounter with divine love propels her to love God more than she ever thought she could. The words she used to express her faith reveal her acknowledgment of being overwhelmed by God’s presence. Her affirmation of faith is not a meek expression, but one that comes from the depths of her soul.
There were other choices Mary could have made to express herself. She could have said, “God, this isn’t fair. What will other people think of me?” I quickly realise that I spend more time than I care to admit worrying and doubting. I tend to think, “Oh Lord, I can’t share my whole self with others, because they will not like me.” A victim mentality overwhelms me, and I find myself lost in a downward spiral of regret. Choosing hope can help us break free from these doubts and fears.
Mary made a choice, and so should we. Let us commit to the ways of God and cultivate a spirit of gratitude this season. If we follow the path of hope and healing, we will begin to see a spirit of hope break through, rescuing us from a space that does not affirm us but seeks to destroy us. As we follow the one who saves us from ourselves, we discover a brighter day, filled with possibilities. Pretty soon, the spirit of God propels us to say, “With all my heart I glorify the Lord.”
Let this season of Advent remind you of whose you are. Reclaim the gift of love that the Father poured out on us and trust in His unwavering love. Be free, and respond accordingly to the giver and restorer of life.
