As I go about my business, preparing for the Christ child’s coming into the world, I ask myself a question that seems to pop into my mind every year. Why do I observe Advent every year? I know the birth story like the back of my hand, so why must I put myself through the spiritual rigor of observing a holy Advent? My frustration builds as I want this time to be over. Let’s celebrate Christmas and return to some feeling of routine. Yet, as I ponder these questions, I invite you to join me in reflecting on your own experiences during this sacred time. What does Advent mean to you, and how does it shape your journey toward the celebration of Christ’s birth? Together, we can deepen our understanding and connection as we travel this path of anticipation and reflection.

Perhaps the ritual cleaning of my spiritual house offers me an exciting opportunity to worship God more fully. I love “The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.” While I am not an alcoholic, the lessons we can glean from the writing lead me to a closer relationship with God. A key principle in the 12 steps is taking a fearless moral inventory of oneself, which I find deeply connected to the observance of Advent. Both involve reflection and renewal—a chance to examine our lives honestly and clear away the spiritual clutter that can obstruct our connection to the Divine. By embracing this parallel, I feel a profound responsibility and desire to observe Advent, preparing my heart for the coming of Christ.

Reviewing my list every year challenges me to “take a fearless moral inventory of myself” and make amends as needed. It is essential to practice this step as a spiritual discipline as I try to let go of resentments and fears. Sometimes I carry resentments and fears from year to year. When I return to them, I give thanks to God for the progress I make and remember that I am not perfect. Grace allows me to continue working toward becoming one with Christ.

Each year, I have a chance to remember the times God led me through the dark, helping me rediscover the passion to become one with the Divine. So, cleaning my spiritual house is simultaneously a celebration and a challenge. As God reminds me of the joys and concerns in my life, I reflect on the renewal and hope that come with every Advent. A verse that resonates with me during this time is Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This scripture encapsulates the spirit of Advent, grounding me in faith and reminding me of the strength I draw from God during this sacred period.

Each time I strive to make my Advent a holy and sobering experience, I remember my relationship with the Almighty. Hope replaces worry, and time spent with God replaces fear with the possibility of a more radiant tomorrow. My faith calls me back to the One who gives me strength. I take the venture through the season to remember; a brighter day is coming. As we journey toward the Christmas Season, let us also embrace the opportunity to support one another within our congregation. By leaning on each other, we can foster a sense of unity and shared spiritual growth, strengthening our communal bond. May God offer you a fearless and holy time during this meaningful season.
